Philadelphia school district was organized in 1818 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It includes primary and secondary public schools in Philadelphia. It is considered as the eighth biggest school district in the whole United States. It has a policy that focuses on the education of children.

The Board of the Philadelphia school district was established in 1850 in order to supervise the schools included in the district. The appointment of the Controllers of the Public Schools of Philadelphia by Court of Common Pleas’ judges was designated by the April 15th of 1867 Act of Assembly. But eventually, school district management was awarded to mayor-appointed school board which continued until the year 2001 when the state has taken over the school district.

Public schools included in the Philadelphia school district are 219 all in all. There are 174 elementary schools, 39 middle schools, 45 high schools, 5 technical or vocational schools, 9 special schools and 19 programs.

Middle and Elementary Schools

The Philadelphia school district has eight types of school such as pre-school, middle school, elementary school, high school, programs, vocational/technical school, charter school and special school. Charter schools in the Philadelphia school district are 55 all in all. Charter school is a secondary or primary school that receives funding from the public, but this type of school is not subjected to some rules, regulations as well as statues that are applicable to other schools (public).

The Philadelphia school district offers three options for student achievement improvement. The first option is the implementation of system-wide initiative centered on the academic perspective within the school program. Second is the selection of some schools for actual intervention, and the last is academic initiatives implementation throughout the entire school district.

The Philadelphia school district provides school service and tokens for free for students in order for them to meet the requirements for eligibility. There are also discounted fair tokens that are beneficial to students who struggle financially and those who don’t meet all the requirements. Philadelphia school district serves 52,000 breakfasts, 117,000 lunches, 4,200 snacks and five to ten thousand meals for dinner. Almost 76% of students of the district can avail the meals for free or with reduced price. Federal job opportunities are also offered to students from the Philadelphia school district.

Philadelphia school district also plans to provide each of their students with world class academic learning, allocating them with equitable resource for their needs as well as accountability for adults.

Through this, every school in the district will be provided with professional development, response team assistance, quarterly evaluation in reading and math subjects and walk-through in a monthly basis. Other supports such as instructional specialists, substitute and full-time teachers, a liaison for social service and increase their nursing service are also offered.
